Kent's turbulence during the Wars of the Roses can ( I think) be explained by it's position as the nearest county to the continent and main route for invaders whichever colour rose they supported. The unfortunate Mayor you mention had to make a choice and unfortunately it proved fatal!
Regards Kim Kim marshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7033960139420817450.post-862811213191097592013-05-12T13:31:39.458-07:002013-05-12T13:31:39.458-07:00Hi Kim, thanks for your comment and yes, I think t...Hi Kim, thanks for your comment and yes, I think this is another important reason for the location of le Hale on the top of the hill. You're right too that Kent has a long tradition of dissent- the mayor was executed for supporting the attacks on the Tower of London by the Bastard of Fauconberg in 1471,plus they had welcomed Warwick when he returned to readept Henry VI in 1470 as well as supporting Buckingham. Also, it's interesting that Canterbury itself sits in a dip, perhaps considered unhealthy, although previous Kings had also stayed in the city itself.

Since I wrote this blog post, we've actually been able to locate the site of Le Hale on an old ordinance survey map- it lies within the "Royal Forest of Blean" on top of the hill, supporting the idea that it was also convenient for hunting. Apparently it's a listed site, so I can't go and poke about there but there seems to be no surviving evidence other than a stone hearth. I'm going to try and track down a copy online and post up the link to the map here, or else venture into the forest myself and try and get some pictures!Amy Licencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16872294626668954201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7033960139420817450.post-48863619520017697292013-05-12T10:34:45.570-07:002013-05-12T10:34:45.570-07:00Dear Amy, I read with interest your article about ...Dear Amy, I read with interest your article about Ric III and le Hale. I had followed the late Dorothy Gardiners view in her classic Companion into Kent and placed le Hale in the little valley just to the north of Palmers Cross hill. If it was actually on the top of Palmers Cross it suggests to me another reason for Richard staying at le Hale rather than in Canterbury. This is simply one of visibility. He may simply have chosen a site on top of a hill overlooking the main road to Canterbury in order to emphasise the fact that He was king and he was in the county. He could have felt this was necessary as Kent was prominently disloyal durung the Buckingham revolt the previous autumn. Also by staying at le Hale where Edward IV also stayed he is emphasising his legitamacy and continuity with the previous regime.
yours, Kim Marshkim marshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7033960139420817450.post-73903659590642345062013-03-08T15:02:06.237-08:002013-03-08T15:02:06.237-08:00Well said Amy!Well said Amy!Susan Abernethyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13559713476508286428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7033960139420817450.post-10886225481360513732013-03-08T11:34:59.770-08:002013-03-08T11:34:59.770-08:00-Amy you're up against what one moderate descr...-Amy you're up against what one moderate described as 'The Cult of St Richard of Fotheringhay' and nothing less than canonization will do.

Unfortunately they left somebody out of their grandiose plan:- Advocatus Diaboli

will do.

UJnfortuantely ther's solmebodyh they l.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
